HISTORY

Symonds Yat is located within the Wye Valley, an area steeped in history and the birth place of British Tourism. Boat trips on the River Wye, Britain’s fifth longest river, started in the late eighteenth century and some of the most famous poets and artists have visited the area, including Wordsworth and Turner.

The name Symonds Yat comes from the 17th century via a sheriff of Herefordshire named Robert Symonds.

Yat is the local name for a gate or pass.
The Wye’s meandering course through the Herefordshire Lowlands and especially through the Wye Gorge, where Holly Tree House is nestled, was and still is one of England's hidden gems. The scenery is spectacular at any time of the year. In Spring, the woodland hills are covered with bluebells. In Summer, the landscape is green and fertile and in Autumn the golden colours are amazing. Between April and August, you may also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the famous nesting Peregrine Falcons.

The ancient hand pull rope ferries used to be the only connection between the two river banks. Today, a single hand pull rope ferry remains. Holly Tree House is directly above this and, for a small fee, the ferry man will safely pull you to the other side where you can hire canoes, enjoy a hearty meal at the Saracens Head Inn or board one of the Kingfisher Cruises for a gentle trip up the river. You can, of course, also walk or drive around!
Holly Tree House was built in the late nineteenth century and we are currently researching the full history of the house.

Prior to its purchase by BigHouseLets Ltd the house was a hotel for many years and we are continually restoring it back to its former Victorian glory whilst ensuring that we retain its wonderful charm and relaxed atmosphere.
"Excellent house for reunions, celebrations or family get-togethers. Wonderful location. Simply had the best time." J.B. Herts.

"Thank you for a fabulous stay at Holly Tree House. We had a truly wonderful time, and it enabled us to all have a great catch up. All the children loved it too, and what an idyllic setting right next to the river. Perfect! We were very impressed with the facilities, space and goods at our disposal at the house." - The Robinsons party.
